Introduction to Health Insurance – eLearning

The client wanted to replace a classroom lesson consisting of lecture and bullet points, into an engaging eLearning experience. The content, basic health insurance, is a bit dry and dull, so the challenge was to present the material in a way that grasped the learner’s attention and kept them engaged.

The solution: a tour of the city. They arrive by helicopter and start their tour with a trip to the local coffee shop. The learner clicks on a building on the city map to visit places like, the library, an Insurance Company, a street fair at the park, and the old town district to visit quaint local shops.

With each module, a total of 5, the narrator takes the learner to a different location, each covering a different topic.

Why this works:

Each topic is presented in a new setting with a completely different set of visuals preventing the learning from getting bored. The end of each module gives them a clue as to where they will go next, creating a bit of anticipation for the learner. Each module was fairly short, 10 minutes or less, allowing the learner to view them separately as their work schedule allowed.

The lesson begins with the course objectives as the learner arrives by helicopter. I used Photoshop to add the headset to the character image.
The learner clicks on different buildings throughout the course. Once visited, a flag is place on the building to show the learner’s progress.
Each segway between subjects takes place outside the site or building they just visited.
The lesson includes an interactive tour through a hospital to get to know different types of healthcare providers.
The narrator hands off the lesson to a nurse who explains insurance information within the hospital’s electronic health records.
One module includes a visit to an Insurance building to learn the basics of government heath insurance programs.
The learner interacts with each person in the library to learn how individuals require different types of health insurance benefits.
